Ulta trek - Pisco & Huascaran
Best time: June to August
Timing: 16 - 18 days Trek and Climb
Grade: difficult (Climbing section only)
Combine a 6 day Santa Cruz Trek with our moderate climbing peak of Pisco, then continue with our challenging Huascaran. The Santa Cruz ulta trek have a wonderful landspace of the cordillera Blanca and pass through many wonderful valleys, glacier lakes and lots of of flowers on the trail, also we will pass many farmlands and some very poor villages like Huaripampa and Colcabamba.
The purpose of the trek is to to enjoy the beauty of the Cordillera Blanca Valley and most important for your acclimatisation. After the trek you will feel fit enough to climb Pisco which will be good for an extra acclimatisation and fitness. After climbing Pisco, we will continue with our last and strenous peak Huascaran.
ITINERARY
Day A: Arrive to Huaraz
Day B & C: Acclimatisation days
Day 1: Huaraz - Cashapampa - Llamacorral
We drive north in a private bus along the Callejón de Huaylas passing through different districts such as: Carhuas (2650m), Yungay (2500m) and to Caraz city (2400m), then we drive up to Cashapampa where the Donkey Driver will be waiting for us to transport our Camping equipments , from here we will start hiking up to the first camp Llamacorral. Overnight camping at (3760m).
Day 2: Llamacorral - Taullipampa
We will hike along the Santa Cruz Valley. It is a fearly easy walking and we will pass the beautiful turquoise lakes called Ichikcocha and Jatuncocha. There is an optional hike up to the Alpamayo base camp, and then we will return on a short cut path for few hours to the next camp at Taullipampa (4250m).
Day 3: Llamacorral - Punta Union Pass - Cachinapampa
A wonderful day as we will start hiking up for about 3 and half hours to the Punta Union pass (4750m) where we will have lunch enjoying the splendid views of the mountains, landscapes, matching its natural mountain colours in the blue sky, the white mountains. The we will descend for about 3 hours to Cachinapampa camp site at (3750m).
Day 4: Cachinapampa - Molinopampa
We continue walking down to Colcabamba town for about 2 hours approximately, then we walk up for an hour more to get a good place camp to have lunch enjoying the nice views of contrahiervas mountain range, then we will go to the next camp at Molinopampa (3600m)
Day 5: Molinopampa _ Avalanche camp
From our Camp we walk uphill for about 4 hours to our next camp at Avalanche camp 4500m. From our camp we will be rewarded with wonderful avalanche fallings and tremendous mountain views.
Day 6: Avalanche camp _ Ulta Valley _ Huaraz
From the camp we walk for an hour to the Pass Punta yanayacu at 4850m, and then we descend in a nice valley surrounded by big mountains like chopicalqui, Huascaran and ulta. On the route the bus will be waiting for us to take back to our Huaraz Hotel
Day 7: Huaraz - Cebollapampa - Base Camp Pisco
We drive north and from Yungay we drive up to the Llanganuco Valley. We drive on a side of the twin lakes of Llanganuco, and then we will continue going up to the Base Camp of Pisco (4600m) on the way will have impressive peaks like Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Pisco, Huandoy, and others. Afternoon check climbing equipments. 4 hours.
Day 8: Base Camp Pisco - Moraine Camp
We will leave camp at 11 am carrying all our climbing gear up to the moraine camp at 4900m; You will carry your personal gear and food, tent and team climbing gear will carry our porters and guides. 4 hours
Day 9: Moraine Camp - Summit Pisco - Base Camp Pisco
We will have breakfast at 2:00am, and we will hike up for 1-hour aprox on the rocky path and then put on our climbing gear to walk in the glacier on a fairly steep walk up to the summit (5750m). From the summit we will have a splendour views of mountains Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Chacraraju, Artesonraju, Huandoy after enjoying the mountain views we will return to Base Camp.
Day 10: Base Camp Pisco - Cebollapampa - Huaraz
After having our last breakfast on the base camp of the Pisco, we will descend to Cebollapampa where the bus we be waiting take us back Huaraz
Day 11: Huaraz - Musho - Base Camp Huascaran
We leave Huaraz at 7:00am and drive along the Callejon de Huaylas up to the town Musho (3100m), where we will meet with our donkey drivers to transport our climbing equipments; from here we will start hiking up to the Base Camp of Huascaran, arriving around 3 or 4:00pm. Overnight Camping at (3800m).
Day 12: Base Camp - Huascarán Camp 1
In the morning we start hiking along the moraine up to the glacier. Then we put our gear to keep climbing in the glacier up to the high camp at (5250m). Overnight at (5250m), camping in the glacier. 6 - 7 hours
Day 13: Camp 1 - Camp 2
After packing our gear we start climbing to the Camp 2, for about 4 hours, in case there are other climbers, passengers have to make queue for to pass the channel and it will take more hours for about 5 hours to get the camp 2, overnight at (6000m), camp in the glacier.
Day 14: Camp 2 - Summit Huascarán - Camp 2
We will start climbing at 1 am after having some hot drink or coca tea. The climbing is not technical but the altitude makes it harder. The ascend is over 45º - 60º, climbers will succeed the summit (6768m) at 10am approximately, then we return to the camp 2 and we stay there.
Day 15: Camp 2 - Base Camp
Early in the morning we will leave the camp 2 and start walking on the same route up to the Base Camp of Huascaran for about 6 - 8 hours approximately, arriving to the Base Camp around 2:00pm, where we will have free afternoon, dinner and beer!!
Day 16: Base Camp - Musho - Huaraz
After having breakfast in the Base Camp we will start at 8:00am approximately, we descend to the Musho twon, arriving around 12m, where our private transport will be waiting for us to take back to Huaraz hotel.
Day 17: Extra day in case bad weather
Day 18: Huaraz _ Lima
