Perú with approximately 30 million habitants .43% of the population are indigenous Indians who mainly inhabit the highlands and speak Quechua although a few speak Aymara in the Lake Titicaca region and an area of 1,285,216 km2, Peru contains some of the most varied geography in South America, comprising three distinct regions: the dry coastal desert, the Andean highlands and the Amazon Basin. The capital city is Lima, located 12º south of the equator on the Pacific coast.

The time zone in the whole country coincides with Eastern Standard time in the U.S. and is five hours behind GMT. Peru has two official languages: Spanish and Quechua, the language of the Inca Empire. English is spoken by some people, mostly in the major tourist areas. For the last 22 years, the government has been a republican democracy. Currently, the president is Alan Garcia Perez

 

Although the Amazonian lowlands make up more than half of Peru only about 6% of the population live there. People of mixed indigenous and Spanish blood (known as mestizo) make up about 38% of the population, 15% white and the remaining 4% are black, Asian or from other backgrounds.
